Backup is a fun trick training ability, but great to show off our dog's skill at parties!

However! This behaviour has extensive use beyond impressing guests. We can communicate more effectively if our dogs understand directions. We can ask them to back up if they're in our way or walk onto the road while walking.

A significant benefit to this one is child safety. Your children can help with the training, and when the dogs are in their way when playing, they can ask them to back up instead of pushing them out of the way.

Pro tip: if your dog tries to sit when backing up while training, hold a treat in both hands, make a fist, hold your hands down, and walk forward. Once your dog backs up 1-3 steps, say YES and give the treat until they understand they're meant to move backwards!

Have fun!
